The Truth About Developmental Delays and Developmental Milestones

Are you ready to unlock the secrets behind your child's growth and development? In a world filled with myths and misconceptions, it's time to separate fact from fiction. From debunking common myths to understanding the pivotal role of developmental milestones, get ready to gain a deeper understanding of your child's development and become their strongest advocate along the way.

Why understanding child development matters

Feeling overwhelmed by the flood of advice and information about child development? Don't worry! We’ll navigate this together. Understanding your child's growth isn't about hitting undefined targets or comparing them to other children. It's about honoring their unique journey and providing the support they need along the way.

Debunking the myths of milestones

Myths surrounding developmental milestones can lead to unnecessary stress and misconceptions. Think your child's early milestones mean they're destined for greatness? Or that developmental delays are a sign of bad parenting? Think again! Every child develops at their own pace, and there's so much more to growth than meets the eye. Early or late milestones don't predict future intelligence.

These myths cause unnecessary worries among parents and caregivers. Here are some of the common ones:

Myth #1: Early milestones mean genius status

Listen up: hitting those milestones ahead of the curve doesn't automatically mean your child is the next Einstein. Each kiddo hits those milestones at their own pace and there is no timeline that dictates genius.

Myth #2: Blame game - poor parenting equals delays

Whoa! That’s a BIG one–and it’s equally FALSE! Developmental delays aren't about pointing fingers at moms and dads. Blaming parents for developmental delays is unfair and inaccurate. From genetics to environment, several factors play into how our little ones grow and learn. It's essential to recognize that delays do not reflect on parenting skills.

Myth #3: Developmental delays determine intelligence

Like Myth #1, intelligence is not determined based on delay or lack of. Children have a range of cognitive, physical, communication, social, and emotional abilities, and not one alone dictates intelligence.

Myth #4: Developmental delays are rare

Developmental delays are more common than many people think, occurring in approximately one out of six children, according to the CDC. That's why keeping an eye on those milestones is key. We need to be aware when an issue is creeping in.

Myth #5: Only sick infants and toddlers end up with delays

Contrary to popular belief, having a health issue doesn't automatically mean your kiddo will face delays, and vice versa. They’re all unique little beings, and their developmental paths can take unexpected turns.

Myth #6: Delays are permanent

Fortunately, delays are not necessarily permanent. Many children can catch up on missed milestones with the right support and interventions. With the right guidance and assistance, children can overcome delays and continue to move forward in their development journey.

Meet Brandy—nurse practitioner, parent coach, and fellow mom in the trenches of high-needs parenting.

She’s navigated the sleepless nights, the endless appointments, the sensory battles, the frustration of fighting for answers, the therapy waitlists, and the constant worry of Am I doing enough? With one kid, it was a feeding disorder that no one seemed to take seriously. With the other, it was a whirlwind of sleep struggles, sensory quirks, and safety worries—eventually leading to an autism and ADHD diagnosis.

But she didn’t just sit back and accept the “wait and see” approach. She dug in—researching, advocating, and using her medical background to find real solutions. And along the way, she realized something: moms like her don’t just need more advice—they need real support from someone who gets it.

If you’re raising a child with autism or ADHD and feel like you’re constantly running on fumes, you’re in the right place. Brandy’s here to share what works, what doesn’t, and how to make sure you don’t get lost in the chaos. Because no mom should have to figure this out alone.
