High-Needs Children: Busting Myths

If your journey involves caring for a high-needs child, buckle up, because we're diving into the world of unique needs, debunking myths, and striving for honesty and loads of support!

Not All High-Needs Kids Are Neurodivergent

So, you've probably heard some "helpful" advice about using the term "neurodivergent" instead of "high-needs." But here's the deal: high-needs doesn't necessarily mean neurodivergent. Yes, some high-needs kids are neurodivergent, but not all. It's like saying all flowers are roses – it's just not accurate!

High-Needs Myth Busting

Now, let's unpack the high-needs who’s who. It's like a big, vibrant family with all sorts of members:

  • Kiddos with feeding/eating quirks.

  • Heroes dealing with mental health.

  • Superstars with learning disabilities.

  • Troopers rocking delays in speech, motor skills, and logic.

  • And so many more.

And guess what? Not every high-needs child has a diagnosis. It's not about boxing them into categories; it's about making sure they get the support they need.

Chill Out, Labels Aren't Welcome Here

Let's talk labels, shall we? Having a high-needs child isn't slapping a label on them. Labels? Ugh, we're leaving those at the door. Labels are for cans, not kids! Using terms like high-needs or a diagnosis is about understanding and love – not negative vibes.

Don't Let Fear Hold You Back

I get it – some folks are worried about "labeling" their kiddos. But hold up! It's not about categorizing them, limiting them, or putting them in a box. It's about giving them the tools to embrace who they are. Fearing labels? Let's leave that in the past, alongside pogs and fanny packs. Yeah, I said it.

Sure, you don’t have to accept a diagnosis. A lot of parents choose not to. But, think about this for a minute – How will your child feel when they are a teen or adult and find out you withheld this information? All of the strife they experience could have been made easier with the right tools in place based on that diagnosis.

🧐 Are you protecting them or hiding yourself?

🧐 What are you protecting them from?

🧐 Do they need protected and will that truly help them in the end?

Here's the Deal with Diagnoses

Diagnosing isn't a dark art – it's like figuring out the secret recipe to your child's awesomeness. Yeah, we've learned a TON about things like ADHD, Autism, and more. And thanks to research, we can give our kids the support they need. The problem? Stigma and negativity have been attached to these diagnoses. It’s time to break free, friends!

Time to Change the Game

Remember when people slapped "labels" on things like pencil cases in grade school? We've moved past that, and it's time to do the same for our kids. We're breaking down barriers, smashing stigmas, and giving our high-needs champs the love and resources they deserve.

The Secret Sauce: Resources and Tools

We all need a support squad, right? And parenting high-needs kids? Well, that's a team sport! Think of resources and tools like your secret weapons. They help you navigate this unique journey like a pro. Oh, and they're not just for your kids – they're for you too!

Parents need support just as much as kids do! We are not in this alone.

Brandy Hall, MSN, RN

Meet Brandy—nurse practitioner, parent coach, and fellow mom in the trenches of high-needs parenting.

She’s navigated the sleepless nights, the endless appointments, the sensory battles, the frustration of fighting for answers, the therapy waitlists, and the constant worry of Am I doing enough? With one kid, it was a feeding disorder that no one seemed to take seriously. With the other, it was a whirlwind of sleep struggles, sensory quirks, and safety worries—eventually leading to an autism and ADHD diagnosis.

But she didn’t just sit back and accept the “wait and see” approach. She dug in—researching, advocating, and using her medical background to find real solutions. And along the way, she realized something: moms like her don’t just need more advice—they need real support from someone who gets it.

If you’re raising a child with autism or ADHD and feel like you’re constantly running on fumes, you’re in the right place. Brandy’s here to share what works, what doesn’t, and how to make sure you don’t get lost in the chaos. Because no mom should have to figure this out alone.
